UEFA Youth League Preview: Red Bull Salzburg U19 and Real Madrid U19 Contest For Place in Final

For the second time in the UEFA Youth League’s short-term existence, Red Bull Salzburg are within touching distance of claiming the ultimate prize in Nyon. Following a nerve-wracking performance against Olympique Lyon in the quarter-finals, Bo Svensson and Matthias Jaissle’s side must overcome Real Madrid to reach the final.

With the help of a nine-minute hat-trick from Junior Adamu either side of the half-time break, Die Roten Bullen scraped through to the final four with a 4-3 win against Lyon, despite taking a 4-1 lead early in the second half. As a result, the team continues to lead the way as the competition’s highest goal scorers with 28 in 9 matches (3.11 per match). Despite knowing where the net is, defensive frailties continue to be a problem and the team can count themselves lucky that Daniel Antosch was able to save the same penalty thrice in the first half, which was ultimately a game defining moment.

Real Madrid’s victory against Inter Milan on Wednesday was a bit more straightforward as they disposed of the Italian side 3-0. The Under-19s of La Fábrica come into this fixture with a bit of momentum as they also defeated Juventus 3-1 in the round of 16 at the weekend after the game was postponed in March. This will be Madrid’s fourth semi-final in the Youth League’s seven-year history, but the team has never progressed – no club has been as unsuccessful at this stage.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams in this competition, but Salzburg have fond memories and a favourable record against Spanish opposition, winning against Atlético Madrid and Barcelona 2-1 en route to lifting the trophy in 2016/17. This is a fixture that has goals written all over it, as, like Salzburg, Madrid know how to find the back of the net and rank third in the competition for goals with 22. Salzburg, on the other hand, have the joint-highest scorer and leading assister left in the competition in Junior Adamu and Karim Adeyemi.

Should Salzburg progress to Tuesday’s final, history may repeat itself as awaiting for them could be 2016/17 runners-up, Benfica, who face Ajax in the other semi-final on Saturday afternoon.
