RB Leipzig Transfer Round-up: January 20-26

The January transfer window is open to business and RB Leipzig will, as usual, be amongst the centre of attention as the club looks for reinforcements to sustain a push for the Bundesliga title, while outsiders aim to poach the talent from right under the club’s nose. To keep you up-to-date, Red Bull Hub will provide a weekly round-up of all Leipzig’s arrivals, departures and rumours.


Name: Josep Martínez | Age: 21 | Club: Las Palmas | Nationality: Spain | Position: goalkeeper | Fee: €2.5 million (reported) | Contract: 4 years

RB Leipzig have completed and announced their first signing of the window in Las Palmas goalkeeper, Josep Martínez. The 21-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the club that will begin from July 1 as he will remain in Gran Canaria until the end of the season.

Name: Dani Olmo | Age: 21 | Club: Dinamo Zagreb | Nationality: Spain | Position: attacking midfield | Fee: €20 million + €5 million add-ons (reported) | Contract: 4 years

Dani Olmo becomes the second arrival of the week and the most expensive in RB Leipzig’s history. Previously courted by Bayern Munich, Atlético Madrid, and Bayern Munich (to name a few) the 21-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the club for a reported €20 million plus €5 million in add-ons and an undisclosed percentage of a future transfer fee, which, as per Sportske novosti, is said to be 20%. He will wear the number 25 shirt.

Rumoured Arrivals

RB Leipzig are the most interested out of a handful of Bundesliga clubs in Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder, Hwang In-beom, who is keen on a move to Germany this summer. Werder Bremen previously wanted the South Korean but have now dropped out of a race that also includes Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha Berlin. If a move to was to materialise, the MLS club will demand a high figure for his signature.

RB Leipzig are showing an interest in signing Chelsea centre-back, Andreas Christensen, on loan. Amid a defensive crisis, the club is looking to bring in reinforcements and are targeting the Danish international, however, Chelsea head coach, Frank Lampard, does not want to let him leave. If a deal doesn’t materialise this month, Leipzig will make another attempt in the summer.

RB Leipzig are showing an interest in Lyon Under-19 winger, Yaya Soumaré. Red Bull Salzburg are also keen on the Frenchman, whose contract expires this summer, while Bayern Munich have already begun negotiations and presented a proposal that will see him either begin with an affiliated club or their second team.

Rumoured Departures

Due to limited opportunities since his return from injury, Hannes Wolf is looking for a loan move away from RB Leipzig this window to boost his chances of selection for this summer’s European Championship. Multiple unnamed Bundesliga are said to be interested in his signature, but Julian Nagelsmann has stated that he will not leave this month and advised him to not look for a way out when things get tough.

Matheus Cunha is another looking for a route out of the club due to minimal opportunities. RB Leipzig are willing to negotiate a deal as long as they can recuperate the €15 million spent to sign him from Sion in 2018. Hertha Berlin are said to be interested in the Brazilian, but is unknown whether Die Roten Bullen will sell him outright or loan him with an option to buy.

At this current moment, it is looking increasingly unlikely that Dayot Upamecano will extend his contract with RB Leipzig, which expires in 2021. Bayern Munich are considering an attempt to take advantage of the situation by making an offer for the 21-year-old in the summer.

Jean-Kévin Augustin’s time on loan in Monaco looks to be coming to an end. His agent is working on getting the contract terminated as he has decided to join EFL Championship contenders, Leeds United, on loan with a purchase option, and will undergo a medical on Monday. The 22-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Rennes, Nice, Saint-Étienne, and Nottingham Forest, is said to have a mutual appreciation with Marcelo Bielsa and would like to team up with him before the window closes.

Chelsea assistant coach, Eddie Newton, is said to be on his way to Trabzonspor and he wants to take Ethan Ampadu with him. Newton has spoken with Chelsea about signing the Welshman on an 18-month loan and the 19-year-old is willing to test himself in Turkey.

Timo Werner’s excellent form this season continues to attract attention from throughout Europe. Barcelona are preparing a move to sign him as the Catalan club aims to replace the injured Luis Suárez, meanwhile Tottenham Hotspur sees Werner as an alternative option if they are unable to sign Willian José from Real Sociedad. However, Bild reports that the 23-year-old’s preferred destination is Liverpool.
