Preview: New York Red Bulls vs. Houston Dynamo

An inter-conference clash sees the Houston Dynamo make the trek across the country to Red Bull Arena, where an ambitious Red Bulls team awaits them, fresh off a victory against their rivals D.C. United. Winless on the road since May and sitting well below the playoff line, Houston are desperate for a victory.

The big question coming into this game is how much rotation will we see from the Red Bulls. After playing three games last week, there are sure to be heavy legs, especially with the high-energy press that the team employs. New York will surely have an eye on the upcoming game against Montreal, as every point matters at this stage of the season. Look for Fidel Escobar to make a return to the lineup, after he recently voiced his displeasure with his lack of playing time following the World Cup. The match against the Dynamo may also afford Armas the opportunity to find a backup to Bradley Wright-Phillips. Some options at his disposal include Derrick Etienne Jr., who had a strong performance against D.C. United at the weekend, and Brian White.

Meanwhile, Houston sit 10th place in the Western Conference, ten points behind the LA Galaxy in 6th. With the playoffs looking increasingly unlikely, Houston will look to gather momentum ahead of the all-important Open Cup final against the Philadelphia Union on September 26. Currently, Houston are winless in their last eight and are struggling to score. To make matters worse, they have never won at Red Bull Arena.

It’s tough to imagine Houston steal the points from the Red Bulls after their recent struggles. However, stranger things have happened in MLS. The Red Bulls must maintain their focus and avoid complacency to pick up all three points and move up to first place in the Eastern Conference.
