Preview: New York Red Bulls vs. D.C. United

The Red Bulls return to the comforts of Red Bull Arena for yet another rivalry match, this time against long-standing foes D.C. United. There’s no rest for the weary as New York find themselves sandwiched between two midweek games amidst a brutal August schedule. D.C. present a unique challenge, coming into this game in a stellar run of form and looking to continue a recent run towards the playoff positions.

New York are coming off a disappointing draw in which they failed to put away nine-man New York city, despite holding a man advantage for upwards of an hour. Bradley Wright-Phillips’ comments exemplified the team’s frustration. “It’s embarrassing. They’re down to nine men (and) we create nothing. It feels like a loss.”

The Red Bulls will use that frustration as fuel to push them past a resurgent D.C. side. Despite wasting golden opportunities in back to back draws, New York continue on in the Supporter’s Shield race, sitting just five points back of Atlanta. With a home heavy schedule on the horizon, the Red Bulls remain confident in their ability to usurp Atlanta at the top of the table.

The arrival of Wayne Rooney and the opening of Audi Field have catalyzed a recent stretch of four wins in five for D.C. United. After sitting bottom of the table in what looked to be a rebuilding year, D.C. have suddenly joined the playoff race. They now look to establish their dominance on the road, starting with a tough test at Red Bull Arena. If they are able to pull off an unlikely victory in New York, it’s likely to come through Luciano Acosta, who has racked up four goals and three assists over the past five matches.

Earlier this season, the Red Bulls defeated DC United 1-0 on the road, handing DC their first loss at Audi Field. It was in that match that Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 100th league goal for the Red Bulls. The Red Bulls look to continue their recent dominance over DC in this age-old rivalry matchup.
