Play Style

Stefan Lainer is the epitome of a modern-day full-back. Constantly on the move forward, he has an important role in Red Bull Salzburg’s build-up as he provides constant width. When he is in possession, he is comfortable taking on his marker and powering into an offensive position with his pace, where he’ll look to whip in a cross or drill a pass into a team-mate waiting on the edge of the area. Often the case for a wide man, Lainer finds himself pinned into a tight space, but the Austrian possesses the ingenuity to wriggle out of complex situations, whether it be through dribbling or combination passing. He also has the vision to spot a runner from deep and can produce a well-weighted pass over the oppositions defensive line. In defence, he is like a brick wall. Opponents struggle against him one-on-one and he reads the play very well, allowing him to intercept a pass and snuff out a potential threat. When Salzburg have a corner, Lainer makes a darting run to the near post where he will nod the ball into a dangerous area for a team-mate to latch onto.
