It’s the second newly promoted opposition in as many weeks as Vorwärts Steyr are the first guests to be welcomed to Liefering’s new home for the season: the Red Bull Arena.
Liefering began the season in a positive manner, defeating Horn 2-1 on the road, thanks to a goal from Philipp Sturm just before the hour mark and a superb first-time strike from outside the area that flew past a crowd and the goalkeeper within a blink of an eye from Nikola Stosic to secure all three points on the opening day.
Steyr were able to achieve a respectable result on home turf against last season’s promotion chasers Ried last week, despite going a goal down within three minutes of the game’s start with a penalty conceded with under two minutes on the clock. The hosts were able to level the scoreline near the end of the first half after Josip Martinović found the back with a looping half-volley from a distance, but they could consider themselves lucky to obtain a point after Ried struck the crossbar and had a shot cleared off the line in quick succession early in the second half.
Despite an impressive debut showing from Ousmane Diakité, he will not be available for this week’s clash due to being given his marching orders in the final minutes of matchday one. Mahamadou Dembélé is unavailable after representing France at the European Under-19 Championship in Finland and Karim Adeyemi remains illegible to play.
