Preview: New York Red Bulls vs. Montreal Impact

New York Red Bulls will play host to Montreal Impact on Saturday night with the two sides looking to gain some ground in the Eastern Conference. Sitting respectively in 6th and 7th, both teams are coming off the back of tough defeats recently. Montreal were defeated 4-0 by New England Revolution last Friday, while the hosts agonisingly crashed out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage, after a 1-0 aggregate loss at the hands of Guadalajara.

The last meeting between the two occurred in July 2017, when the Red Bulls came out as 4-0 victors, thanks to a Daniel Royer brace, as well as goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Michael Murillo. The match was heavily dominated by the Red Bulls’ tendency to press high up the pitch, and with Montreal fielding a midfield with the average age of 32.6, the home side were able to take control of the midfield.

New York Red Bulls’ last league outing was in the seven-goal thriller against Orlando City two weeks ago. With the Champions League first leg in mind, Jesse Marsch selected a heavily rotated eleven in a match that saw the visitors take the lead twice in Orlando, but were ultimately defeated after Josué Colmán found the back of the net in the 86th minute. Despite the result New York’s performance was of a high standard, pressing their opponents into their own half for a lot of the game. Unfortunately, the side couldn’t hold up, as former Orlando duo Tommy Redding and Aurélien Collin weren’t up to scratch on the day.

Montreal have had a rather disappointing start to the season, obtaining just six points out of a possible 15. While veteran Ignacio Piatti and newcomer Jeisson Vargas have produced strong performances this season, the team are yet to fully gel. This is most evident in their defensive efforts, conceding 11 goals in their opening five matches of the season. This is an area New York Red Bulls could look to exploit as they aim to maintain their unbeaten home record.
